One of the great Kinks' songs of all time is "Village Green Preservation Society." Originally released back in 1968, it was met with deafening silence, utterly ignored by audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. The quaint tune and ironic lyrics were out of step with a generation more interested in acid, purple haze, and fuzzy guitar solos:
We are the Office Block Persecution Affinity
God save little shops, china cups and virginity
We are the Skyscraper condemnation Affiliate
God save tudor houses, antique tables and billiards
Preserving the old ways from being abused
Protecting the new ways for me and for you
What more can we do?
God save the Village Green
That historical injustice, however, is now in the process of being rectified. A lovely new cover version of the song, by the singer Kate Rusby, is creeping up the charts in the UK. It's the theme song for a new television comedy, "Jam and Jerusalem," created by Jennifer Saunders of "Absolutely Fabulous" (another show that cited the Kinks from time to time).
You can listen to Rusby's version and watch a clever slideshow of images that represent the lyrics here:
