Entry for January 10, 2009: NHK is at it again

A couple of weeks back, I wrote here about how NHK can suprise you every once in a while.   They got me again last night.

I was watching the latest installment of "Dan Dan," the current morning drama.  Megumi, one of the heroines in this wholesome story about twin sisters trying to make it as pop singers, was as usual wearing a shirt with English words emblazoned across its front.  The particular phrase this time caught my eye.  It took some use of the fast forward and rewind buttons, but I finally pieced the words together.

Her shirt read as follows (with the font in this style):

NINETYNINE

PERCENT IS

SHIT

It woke me up, that's for sure.  What message do you think NHK was trying to send?

Later, I watched NHK's special on the concert Sawada Kenji gave at the Tokyo Dome last month to mark his kanreki, or 60th birthday.  He performed a total of 80 songs in a concert that took seven hours from beginning to end.  I'm not a huge fan of the man known by his fans as "Julie," but I was glad to see him perform "Seaside Bound," complete with that dworky dance step they used for the song back when he was in The Tigers

Starting tonight, NHK will bring me two weeks of sumo.  I wonder if they have any other surprises up their sleeve....
