Ever since I first heard it last autumn, M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes" has been stuck on permanent repeat in my brain. Seeing the movie Slumdog Millionaires on a free evening I had last week in Princeton didn't help matters. Now the single has finished in first place in the Village Voice's annual Pass and Jop poll.
I'll be walking down the street in Hyde Park, minding my own business, when suddenly those damnably catchy gun shot and cash register beats will start pounding out in my head. It's all I can do to keep myself from dancing and singing. This simply has to stop.
Please, please, please, Shiina Ringo: release a new single, one so full of irresistable hooks that it will wipe all traces of M.I.A. from my memory. If Shiina isn't up to the task, then I'm begging Kanye West or Outkast. I need a mega-pop hit to get over this one.
In the meanwhile, all I wanna do (bang bang bang bang), all I wanna do is fly like paper, get high like planes.....
