What's the deal with sumo wrestlers and weed? Yet another arrest and explusion this week for possession of ganja, this time of Wakakirin, a promising young Japanese wrestler. This comes after three Russian wrestlers were kicked out last year after failing drug tests. Wakakirin failed his test then, too, but passed on a re-take. You'd think he would have been ultra-cautious after that, but it appears otherwise.
Once again all of the oyakata are on television, apologizing and promising for the umpteenth time that they really, really are going to clearn up sumo this time. How many heads do they have left to roll? It's a shame, too, that this would happen just weeks after the very exciting, very successful January tournament ended, which seemed to promise a brighter year for the sport.
I know it's a high stress lifestyle, but really.... As we used to tell freshly arrived American exchange students in Tokyo, "There is a message for you all in Japan's ultra-strict, zero-tolerance drug laws: drink beer."
